Doctor at your own home

During the twentieth century medicine has reached a remarkable development. While in the nineteenth century relief was more frequent than healing, twentieth-century medicine has experienced a great boost. Scientific and technical development is the main reason for the progress of medicine, and the figure of the doctor has progressed with it. The figure of the doctor has been transformed from a purely priestly facet to becoming a technical advisor for his patients, getting a relationship in which patient and doctor collaborate for a common purpose.

Currently, due to the accelerated digital transformation that is experienced in companies, the role of the CIO is evolving and taking more weight in the decision making of companies. For all those who do not know what charge we are referring to, the CIO is the Chief Information Officer, which, among other functions, has the responsibility of making the company aware of the need to control risks and invest in security. Gartner, a consulting and information technology research company, has conducted a survey of CIOs from Europe, the Middle East and Africa to learn about the current status of this position within companies.

The importance that the role of the CIO is taking within the companies is represented in the results of the survey: 82% of the CIOs of the digital business have developed a greater capacity for change and a more open mentality in their organizations. But not only has its capacity increased when it comes to making decisions, but, according to the study, the CIOs of Europe, the Middle East and Africa have increased the amount of time spent in leadership.

According to Andy Rowsell-Jones, vice president of Gartner, "Although the delivery of IT remains the responsibility of the CIO, other functions, such as the achievement of revenue reach and the development of digital transformation, have been identified as The most common priorities of the companies for 2018." Now the Chief Information Officer has a new purpose, the alignment with the priorities of the organizations to further increase their relevance.

This trend is beginning to be felt within the companies and 26% of the CIOs surveyed expect their job to begin to take a more commercial orientation. The respondents themselves identify the sectors of analytics and intelligence, along with those of digitalization, such as the technological areas that will help them differentiate themselves and achieve success within companies.

The widespread adoption of digital technology is increasing the scope of the role of the CIO. 46% of the respondents are currently in charge of the digital transformation of the companies in which they work and 41% are responsible for their innovation. In addition, many of them claim that their organizations are experimenting with digital security, IoT and artificial intelligence. This means a greater knowledge of the latest technologies and, due to this, a greater preparation to face security breaches.

As the functions of the CIO expand, this position has become the key element for the propulsion of the company towards digital transformation and its adaptation to the rapid technological evolution that these days are experiencing. One of the new functions of this role is the design and implementation of initiatives, which together with the establishment of improvements and innovations of solutions and products, will increase the risk management and the continuity of the company.

But digital transformation is not only affecting the role of the CIO, but the entire IT department. Almost half of respondents believe that their department, in the not too distant future, will become an independent digital team that will directly inform the CEO of the companies, increasing their impact on decision making.

As has happened with the role of doctors during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, CIOs are beginning to be taken into account because safety is one of the priorities for many companies. Giving autonomy and power to this position benefits the company, increasing its capacity to manage risks and its ability to respond to possible attacks.
